Looking back across decades of assisting students prepare their college applications, I see wonderful moments.Talking with students about their passions, experiences and interests—imagining a conversation with a 17th century French physicist, growing up in foster care, starting businesses, collecting 1000 purses, designing international treaties to manage water access between neighboring belligerents, zoning out in class, caring for elderly parishioners during Covid, deciding to do my homework, protecting my undocumented parents, discovering new medical therapies, worrying about my incarcerated brother, winning in e-sports, writing the next great American novel, writing the next great app, drawing on the underside of the kitchen table, going to prom with my same sex sweetheart, going to an integrated prom, and more—was joy unbound.

Now it is time for me to look forward to new adventures. Some of them are planned, some imagined, and some suspended in serendipity. My students inspire me to make big steps into my life’s new chapter.

To all of my students, I wish you the best as you go forward in life. You are each very special, and always will be.
